LVSA Select Teams vs. NSPPP/Metro Teams:

Information to help you understand the two programs

What are LVSA Select Teams?

It is LVSA’s goal to place players at the level of skill and competitiveness that they are best able to compete so that LVSA can field the most competitive teams possible at each level. Evaluations are done each year for LVSA Divisional players U12 to U18 Gold/Silver. The number of Gold/Silver Teams assigned are based on such criteria as skill of players, numbers of players and /or coaches available for selection. It is LVSA’s mandate to form a minimum of one Select team for each age group. Second and third teams will be encouraged if player numbers and skill permit, as well as available coaches. LVSA Select Teams represent Lynn Valley Soccer Association, and are comprised of eligible LVSA players.

What is the NSPPP/Metro program?

The North Shore Premier Player Program (NSPPP) was instituted by a member-vote at the North Shore Youth Soccer Association (NSYSA) AGM of 2002, and reviewed by the member clubs in December 2004, at which time the club boards voted to “extend the NSPPP into a competitive program from U14 to U18 – the current age-range of the BC Youth Select Soccer League (BCYSSL).”

What is the difference between the two?

NSPPP teams are more selective and more competitive than LVSA Select teams; they are intended for boys looking for the highest level of competition for their age group. They also include quite a bit more travel for games, as all non-home games are off the North Shore. The cost for NSPPP participation is significantly higher than for LVSA Select teams.

Who can participate in the NSPPP?

The NSPPP focuses on player development and competition for boys U13-U18 who reside in the North Shore District (North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Squamish). Boys who do not reside in the North Shore District are not eligible to participate in the NSPPP. Once you are chosen to participate in the NSPP program you are no longer affiliated with LVSA. However, if you choose to leave the NSPPP program and want to continue soccer at the club level, you are expected to register with your original club (LVSA).

What age groups are eligible for NSPPP/Metro?

The NSPPP fields tiered teams at U14, U16 and U18 to represent the District in competitive play in the BCYSSL. The number of teams fielded at each age-group in each season is determined on the basis of the talent pool in any given year. The “A” team is named the “North Shore Selects” and the “B” team is named the “North Shore Metros.” U13, U15 and U17 players are encouraged to try out for the team one year above their age group. The reason for only three age-group teams is that those are the only age groups eligible for Provincial tournaments.

What is the NSPPP season timing?

The U14-U18 NSPPP operates from September-March and then until the end of a team’s BCYSSL competitive season.

How do interested boys get evaluated for the NSPPP?

Player evaluation camps for these age groups take place during the preceding March-April; all players wishing to play must attend the evaluation camps, unless they have been exempted from attendance by the NSPPP Committee on the advice of the NSPPP Technical Director. Further exceptions to ID camp attendance will be considered where there are medical or other reasons not under the control of the player. Selection into NSPPP is based mainly on demonstrated skill, commitment, and player development potential. Continued participation by a player in the NSPPP will be dependent upon continued commitment to the program and a continuing excellent attitude and commitment level.

If my son is interested in playing for an NSPPP/Metro team, should he also be evaluated for his age-group LVSA Select Team?

Yes. If your son is not selected to participate in the NSPPP program he may wish to play on a LVSA select team. To do this he must have been evaluated within the LVSA evaluation program.

STRICT BAN ON GRASS FIELD PRACTICES
Because grass fields are so easily damaged, the District of North Vancouver enforces a strict no-practice rule for all grass fields. This encompasses all types of practice, from simple conditioning drills to full-fledged scrimmages. Most LVSA teams respect this rule and help to protect our grass fields by staying off. For those tempted to bypass this rule, please note that teams found practicing on a grass field will automatically lose their grass privileges for the year. The District also levies fines of up to $500 to violators. If you know of anyone practicing on grass fields, please tell them to stop.
